Some beginner and student Locksmiths use a bench vise . . . others a pair of Vise Grips taped firmly to a work bench.  There has to be some manner in which a Practice Lock is held firmly so the student can have the use of both hands, for lock picking practice. The use of a bench vise is, of course, perfectly acceptable, but not everyone has a bench vise and those that do quite often have them out in their garage.  Not the nicest place to set up your practice sessions (I'm assuming).
