The pick gun has evolved from the old bent wire model that was common decades ago, and is still available with some looking. Now they are super reliable and better built than ever. The old standby by Lockaid (Majestic) is still very much in evidence in the lockout kits of professional Locksmiths, simply because it is a proven commodity with a real Lifetime Warranty. Brockhage has followed suit by offering the same guarantee on their BPG-10 model, which is very similar to the Lockaid.

HPC has long held that their HPG-10 is the best around, and I know a lot of 'smiths who would concur. At any rate, we offer several top of the line models and a couple of extremely well made electrics.

Pick guns, of course, are used to pick locks. That is their one and only task in life. They are a viable alternative to manual lock picking, but only if used properly. Like standard lock picking, it takes some practice (and practice practice practice) to truly devlop the skill required for repetetive success with a pick gun. Add to that the fact that one model may feel better and work better for you than another. For this reason it's hard to say which is the best. You kind of grow into the gun and become proficient with what you've got.

The theory behind pick guns is called the percussion lock picking technique. When the trigger is activated, the picking needle, which has been inserted all the way to the back of the lock plug, springs upward with considerable force (which is adjustable through a narrow range using the thumb wheel adjuster). This force is applied to the bottom pins, which in turn transfer the energy to the top pins. This causes an instant though short-lived separation between the bottom and top pins. Because constant tension is applied to the plug while this is going on, the plug will rotate when all the top pins have separated from the bottom pins at the same instant. Due to the fact that the bottom pins will have varying sizes, this instant doesn't happen frequently. The trick is to keep firing away until that ideal separation occurs, and the plug turns. Patience is paramount, as is skill..
