RECOMMENDED SHOP TOOLS FOR STARTING UP A SHOP
We get a lot of email, and one of the most
common inquiries goes something like this: "What do I really need
in the way of tools to open a small Locksmith shop, or maybe a mobile lockout
service?"
Here is a list of basics. Consider these items the
things you need first, before you go out and buy that super shiny automatic
key duplicator that'll probably empty your meager bank account. Most
people who do any locksmithing at all have these tools, or some of them,
but this list is intended for the stone cold beginner who has just last evening
decided the time is right to get a start in Locksmithing:
- Lock pick set
- Pick gun, manual
- Plug spinner
- AA or AAA flashlight (torch,
for you Brits)
- Small tool box for your lockout
tools (I use a tackle box)
- WD40 or some other oil-less
lubricant
- Pinning kit (a universal type
is most useful)
- Rekeying tools such as a set
of plug followers, pin tweezers, Truarc pliers, etc.
- At least one, preferrably several
fine metal files
- Common screwdriver assortment,
both standard and Philips
- Locksmith hammer, or a small
tack hammer and a small rubber tipped mallet
- Hand held or stand mounted
magnifying glass
- Key duplicating machine (a
must, even for beginners)
- Good assortment of the most
common household and automotive key blanks
- Assorted common shop tools (needle nose pliers, regular pliers, wire cutters)

WHAT MAKES AN EXCELLENT CUT AWAY PRACTICE LOCK?
To be a truly
effective training tool, a cut away Practice Lock must be precisely and
meticulously milled and then finished by hand to remove barbs, sharp edges,
and left over brass dust. There must be as much material removed from
the upper pin chamber as possible, just short of allowing the top pins and
top springs to escape, yet not so close to this extreme that the stresses
put to it through lock picking practice might enlarge the milled slots enough
to allow loss of parts.
Also, the slot at the shear line must be wide enough to be of use to the
student, but not so wide that bottom pins can escape when the plug is rotated
slightly to one side.
Even more important is the stock that is used. If the lock cylinder
is of poor quality, with a lot of 'slop' and not well machined, it will be
a waste of time to practice picking it. We use high quality lock cylinders
that closely approximate the tolerances found in such well known brands
as Schlage and Kwikset.
Take a look at our selection. We
recommend that every beginner purchase at least three Practice Locks --
a 3-pinned, 5-pinned and 5-pinned Cut Away version. Several of our complete Practice Kits contain

kit, which happens to be our best selling Lock Picking Practice Kit.

of perjury that at least one of the above classifications pertains to you.
