SOME COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT THE EZ-ReKey PRACTICE LOCK:
Do I need the Cut-Away version?
We recommend the Cut-Away version for beginners who are not familiar with how pin tumbler locks work and have never seen what goes on inside a lock when lock picks are used. If you have some experience already, and you know how these locks function, you are probably better off buying the Standard model.
Do I need a Practice Lock Stand?
Not required, but highly advisable for your lock picking practice sessions. In lieu of a stand, you can clamp the lock CAREFULLY in a bench vise, but be warned that damaged can occur if care is not taken.
I'm new to lock picking, will this lock be too much for me?
Because you can pin it up any way you want to, this lock can be as easy as you need it to be -- even a single-pinned lock that will pick instantly with anything you shove into the keyway! The beauty of this design is that it progresses with you, and helps you challenge yourself at your own pace. Eventually you'll want to have it pinned with all 6 chambers filled, and with the spool drivers replacing the standard top pins that come with the lock. This makes the lock brutally difficult to pick -- but it is so versatile you can work your way up to that a step at a time.
Is this lock under warranty?
It is covered by a limited 1-year replacement warranty, should it ever break or malfunction. This warranty does NOT cover loss of parts or damage inflicted by the use of pick guns or electric picks (yes, we can tell when these tools have been used).
Should I buy the instructional DVD?
Many people learn more quickly with visual aids, and for these people the DVD is a blessing. If you are comfortable following printed instructions with static photos as guides, you should be okay with the instructions you receive with the lock. The DVD is a very good way to learn the procedure quickly.
Can I rekey this lock using regular rekeying tools and procedures?
Yes, in fact we encourage this if you know how to perform standard rekeying and you have the necessary tools. These locks use the very common screw-on end cap arrangement similar to Schlage and Weiser cylinders.
Are the cylinders you use high quality, or are they cheap knock-offs with a lot of loose tolerances?
We use high quality brass cylinders with tolerances comparable to the best 'brand name' cylinders. In fact, these cylinders can be found in many commercial duty deadbolts sold by various distributors. They have close tolerances to give you the kind of lock picking challenge you need if you are going to develop a high level of skill. We refuse to use shoddy, cheap cylinders and this is why the price of the EZ-ReKey locks is a bit higher than you might have expected. Keep in mind that name-brand Schlage pin tumbler cylinders (just the cylinders, not the complete hardware) can cost as much as $65 each!
Which keyway should I order when I purchase my EZ-ReKey Lock?
Generally speaking, the Kwikset keyway is the best to begin with if you are a beginner or someone with little practice. Move up to the Schlage keyway when you have developed some skill, as the Schlage keyway is more constricted and is shaped in such a way as to make the use of lock picks more challenging. This is one of the security benefits of Schlage locks and locks that make use of the Schlage keyway.
