THE ELECTROPIK FROM HPC - Long a locksmith favorite, still in the running

Like Ford vs. Chevy, you'll find locksmiths out there that have undying loyalty to certain long-standing tools.  I know of several who wouldn't own anything but tools made by HPC.  Also, there are quite a number of lock techs who swear by the EPG-1 Electropik and wouldn't even try another.

Loyalty must be earned, so there must be a very good reason that the EPG-1 continues to outsell other electric pick guns.

It's original straight line shape has been modernized and it now sports a more comfortable ergonomic shape.  But the biggest change is that it is no longer a rechargeable system using a proprietary built-in battery.  Instead it has evolved away from the concept and has become ten times more practical.  HPC converted the EPG-1 to accept common household AA batteries!  If power gets low, pop in fresh bats and away you go -- no more running back to an AC outlet to get one of those super slow charges.  And if you use rechargeable batteries, suddenly it's a rechargeable pick gun again!

Like all pick guns, the ElectroPik uses a modified percussion technique to pick locks.  The pick needle rapidly oscillates up and down with a tension that is easily adjusted with the tension knob.  The needle causes the bottom pins in the lock to "dance", which produces a momentary separation between bottom and top pin.  With slight and varying tension on the tension wrench, top pins are progressively trapped in the upper chamber until a complete shear line is produced and the lock plug turns.  Easy.
