From LearnLocks, an extremely well machined keyed padlock, pin tumbler type, that has been precisely cut away (milled) to expose the pin stacks in the key cylinder. In addition to this, cuts have been made to show actions of lock plug, locking cam “locking dog”, and shackle. The open view of all of the pin stacks makes for an excellent learning tool. By watching the movement of the pins, as you practice your lock picking skills, you will gain a better understanding of how and why a lock can be compromised.
I've seen a few attempts at creating a good cut away padlock but this one is top of the line. It would be invaluable to a student Locksmith, or a hobbyist who is working to improve this picking methods with padlocks.
Padlocks, contrary to what might seem obvious, are not always easy to pick. The keyways are generally smaller, pins and springs likewise, and they can be very difficult to position properly if they are attached to a hasp. It is only fitting that the student spend time practicing with padlock picking as it is not always the best decision to cut or drill, since many are hardened.
